LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A fire early Tuesday morning caused significant damage to a single-family home at N. Montague Drive, Leonardtown, in St. Mary’s County. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 4:02 a.m. when the homeowners were awakened by the sound of smoke alarms. The alarms, which were present and functioning properly, notified the sleeping occupants of the danger, allowing them to safely evacuate the house.

The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with 40 firefighters and managed to control the fire within ten minutes of arrival. The blaze originated on the rear deck of the house, but firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading to the interior of the dwelling.
The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in structural damage. The value of the contents damaged is yet to be determined.
Preliminary reports suggest the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Maryland State Fire Marshal Office – Southern Region Office is leading the investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact them at 410-414-3600.
