During the overnight hours of Tuesday, June 18, several motor vehicles in neighborhoods surrounding Chancellors Run Road in Great Mills were entered, and items were stolen. Many of these cars were left unlocked, making them easy targets for thieves.
Video surveillance from residences in the area captured what appears to be the same three individuals entering or attempting to enter several different cars. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these incidents, seeking to identify and apprehend the suspects involved.
The Sheriff’s Office has urged residents to take precautions to prevent further incidents. “We remind everyone to lock their cars, even when parked in driveways or in front of homes. Unlocked cars are easy targets for thieves,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said. “Taking a few seconds to secure your vehicle can save you from potential theft and loss.”
The Sheriff’s Office has provided multiple ways for the public to assist in the investigation. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact Deputy Richard Stillwell at Richard.Stillwell@stmaryscountymd.gov or 301-475-4200, ext. 8183.
For those who prefer to remain anonymous, tipsters can call Crime Solvers 24/7 at 301-475-3333 or send a text to Crime Solvers at 274637. Tipsters should type “Tip239” in the message block and select SEND. After receiving a response, they can continue their conversation.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of locking vehicles to deter theft. They recommend removing valuables from cars or hiding them out of sight if leaving them in the vehicle is unavoidable. Additionally, installing motion-activated lights or surveillance cameras can further deter criminal activity.
The recent spate of thefts in Great Mills has left the community on high alert. Many residents are taking extra precautions, such as forming neighborhood watch groups and increasing communication about suspicious activities.
