The Charles County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) will host an Independence Day and Alumni Reunion concert on Saturday, June 29, at 8:00 PM. The event will be held at the newly constructed pavilion at the Alice Ferguson Foundation, located at 2201 Bryan Point Road in Accokeek, Maryland. This concert, free and open to the public, promises an evening of diverse musical performances featuring both current CCYO members and alumni.

Musical Program

Attendees can expect a varied musical program including pieces from “The Avengers,” traditional fiddle tunes, “Ashokan Farewell,” “Simple Gifts,” the “1812 Overture,” and “Ode to Joy.” Additionally, works by renowned composers such as Pachelbel and Handel will be performed. The concert will showcase talent from all four CCYO ensembles: Prelude Strings, Encore Band, Encore Strings, and the full CCYO orchestra.

Upcoming Events

Following the Independence Day concert, the CCYO Chamber Music Festival will take place with concerts scheduled for July 20 and 27 at 8:00 PM at Christ Church in La Plata. These events offer further opportunities to experience the exceptional talent fostered by the CCYO.

Auditions for Next Season

Looking ahead, CCYO will hold auditions for the next season on September 14 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Christ Church in La Plata. Musicians of all levels and instruments, with the exception of piano, are encouraged to audition. This inclusive call aims to attract a wide range of young talent to continue the orchestra’s tradition of musical excellence.

Recent Achievements

The CCYO has recently garnered significant recognition. The orchestra was spotlighted in an online film by the Charles County Arts Alliance and featured on WTOP radio. Additionally, two CCYO String Quartets reached the finals of the prestigious Washington Performing Arts Society Misbin Chamber Music Competition in Washington, D.C.

Regular Performances and Community Engagement

Each year, the CCYO presents two major concerts alongside several smaller performances. The orchestra also hosts a two-week Chamber Music Festival, culminating in two additional chamber music concerts. Students benefit from a variety of educational experiences, including masterclasses and sectional rehearsals.

This past year, the CCYO has performed at several notable venues, including the Port Tobacco Courthouse, the Maryland Veterans Museum, Kris Kringle at the Fairgrounds, the Village Green in Indian Head, Christ Church in La Plata, and the Alice Ferguson Foundation. These performances underscore the CCYO’s commitment to community engagement and providing high-quality musical experiences throughout the region.
