Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office executed a search and seizure warrant on July 9 at a residence located in the 21000 block of Dayflower Place in Lexington Park, Maryland. The operation was part of an ongoing investigation.

During the search, detectives discovered a 9MM handgun in a bedroom owned by 19-year-old Zemar David-Tyshon Batts. Batts was arrested and has been charged with possession of a regulated firearm by an individual under the age of 21, a violation of Maryland’s firearm regulations.

Additionally, investigators found a second firearm during the search, which had been reported stolen in Hagerstown, MD, back in 2017. However, no charges have been issued regarding this weapon as the investigation continues.

Following the search and arrest, Batts was transported to the Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown for processing. After his appearance before the District Court Commissioner, he was released on his own recognizance.

The case highlights ongoing issues with illegal firearm possession among youth and the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing gun violence. The recovery of a stolen weapon also underscores the complexities of firearm trafficking and the importance of diligent investigative efforts in tracking such items.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession and origins of the firearms found. The findings from this case may assist in broader efforts to address illegal gun possession and enhance community safety.
