LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) will host its annual Chamber Music Festival with two free concerts set for the scenic Christ Church garden at 112 Charles Street, La Plata. The concerts are scheduled for consecutive Saturdays, July 20 and 27, starting at 8:00 p.m. In the event of bad weather, the performances will move indoors.

The festival will showcase the talents of CCYO student ensembles and directors, featuring works by renowned composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, and Haydn. These events, open to the public, provide a family-friendly opportunity to enjoy classical music performed by gifted young musicians.

Dr. Osman Kivrak, Director of CCYO, emphasized the benefits of the program, stating, “Participating in CCYO and chamber music helps students develop good working habits: teamwork, social and emotional skills, discipline and perseverance while having fun performing great works of composers from all around the world.”

Rev. Dr. Kate Heichler, pastor of Christ Church, also expressed enthusiasm about the church’s involvement. “The arts are essential to the health and wellbeing of the next generation, and we are proud to support CCYO,” she said.

The CCYO not only performs at these annual events but also offers auditions for new members, which are scheduled for September 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Christ Church. All instrumentalists, except pianists, are encouraged to apply.

In addition to local performances, the CCYO has been recognized on various platforms, including an online feature by the Charles County Arts Alliance and a segment on WTOP radio. The orchestra’s string quartets also gained acclaim as finalists in the Washington Performing Arts Society Misbin Chamber Music Competition in Washington, D.C.

CCYO’s extensive program includes two large concerts, a two-week Chamber Music Festival, additional chamber music concerts, a Concerto Competition Concert, masterclasses, and sectional rehearsals across its four ensembles. Past venues include the Port Tobacco Courthouse and the Maryland Veterans Museum, among others.

The orchestra receives support from several local organizations and businesses, including the Charles County Charitable Trust, the Maryland State Arts Council, and Potters Violins, reflecting a community-wide commitment to fostering young musical talent.
