Three employees from Calvert County’s Public Transportation Division have received the Team Excellence Award from the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners for their instrumental role in implementing the county’s new fare-free policy. Sharon Robinson, Lynn Brooks, and Cynthia Hardesty were recognized for their rapid response and technical expertise, which ensured a seamless transition to fare-free transit across the county.
The county commissioners presented the award to the three employees, who are now affectionately known as the “Fare Fixers,” for their dedication in reprogramming fare boxes on the eve of the policy change, which took effect on July 1, 2024. The transition to fare-free transportation aligns with Calvert County’s objectives to improve accessibility and public service in the region.

On June 30, just one day before the policy was implemented, Robinson, Brooks, and Hardesty reprogrammed the transit fare collection systems, completing the work in the final hour before the policy shift. Their proactive approach averted any potential disruption for residents relying on public transportation, reflecting their efficiency and commitment to community service.
Dedication Beyond the Fare-Free Transition
Beyond this recent effort, the honorees have been lauded for their ongoing dedication to the public transportation division. In response to persistent driver shortages affecting public transit systems nationwide, the trio has regularly worked overtime to support the local system’s operations. The “Fare Fixers” are viewed as model employees who contribute significantly to the efficiency and reliability of Calvert County’s transit system, particularly during challenging times.
“This team’s commitment to making public transportation accessible to all in Calvert County is exemplary,” stated the Board of County Commissioners in the award announcement. “Their hard work and quick action to support the fare-free policy transition highlights the importance of dedication and teamwork in public service.”
Impact on the Community
The transition to fare-free transportation in Calvert County is expected to enhance mobility options for residents, particularly those in need of affordable travel solutions. By eliminating fares, the county aims to boost ridership and provide an inclusive public transportation environment, reinforcing its commitment to serving the community equitably.
The award ceremony honoring the “Fare Fixers” served as a platform for the county to emphasize its broader public service mission and acknowledge the importance of teamwork. Their efforts underscore how dedicated public employees can make a tangible difference in the lives of residents, contributing to a more connected and accessible Calvert County.
