After 34 years of dedication to St. Mary’s County Public Schools, Dr. Maureen Montgomery, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, has announced her retirement, effective December 1, 2024. In recognition of her longstanding service, Superintendent Dr. J. Scott Smith extended warm wishes on behalf of the Board of Education, staff, students, and families in the district, honoring her commitment to education in the county.

With Dr. Montgomery’s departure, Dr. Joseph Beavers has been appointed as Acting Deputy Superintendent, assuming the role on Monday, October 28, 2024. Currently serving as Director of Maintenance in the Division of Supporting Services, Dr. Beavers brings a wealth of experience to his new position. His background with St. Mary’s County Public Schools spans roles as an elementary teacher, assistant principal, and principal. His earlier career included positions as a technology education teacher and dean of students in Calvert County Public Schools, as well as an elementary education teacher, dean of students, and assistant principal in North Carolina.

In conjunction with this shift, Mr. Joseph Wysokinski will step into Dr. Beavers’ current role, becoming the Acting Director of Maintenance. Wysokinski, who has been Supervisor of Maintenance within the Division of Supporting Services, will take on his new duties effective October 28, 2024. He brings additional administrative experience to the position, having previously worked as a high school assistant principal within St. Mary’s County Public Schools.

The retirement of Dr. Montgomery marks the end of an era for St. Mary’s County Public Schools, with leadership acknowledging her invaluable contributions over more than three decades.
