Detective Sergeant David Roys of the La Plata Police Department and Police First Class Kenneth Harvey of the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center have successfully completed Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), a program designed to enhance law enforcement interactions with individuals experiencing mental health crises.

The 40-hour CIT course, held at the Calvert Training Center in Port Republic, Maryland, equips law enforcement personnel, communications staff, and corrections officers with the skills to identify signs of mental illness and employ de-escalation techniques during crisis situations. This training aims to improve community relations and ensure the safety of both officers and individuals in crisis.
CIT is a nationally recognized model that fosters collaboration between law enforcement and mental health professionals, promoting effective responses to mental health emergencies. By completing this training, Detective Sergeant Roys and PFC Harvey are better prepared to serve the La Plata community with increased awareness and sensitivity toward mental health issues.
The La Plata Police Department remains committed to professional excellence and community engagement, continually seeking opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of its officers to better serve the public.
