The Maryland Commission on Public Health convened its monthly meeting on November 7, focusing on strategies to enhance public health systems, improve healthcare accessibility, and advance health equity for Maryland residents. Co-chaired by Dr. Meena Brewster, the meeting highlighted collaborative approaches to address health disparities.

Integrating Health Equity: UMMS Initiatives

Dr. Roderick King, Senior Vice President and Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer at the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), delivered a presentation on the health system’s efforts to incorporate equity into its operations. Dr. King outlined how UMMS uses data metrics to identify and monitor health disparities and deploys targeted interventions to address social determinants of health. He emphasized shared accountability between healthcare providers and public health agencies, showcasing examples of successful partnerships in improving health outcomes.

“Health equity requires a collective effort,” Dr. King stated, urging public health leaders to strengthen collaboration with healthcare delivery organizations to drive meaningful change.

Statewide Public Health Planning

Dr. Katherine Feldman, Chief Performance Officer for Public Health Services at the Maryland Department of Health, followed with updates on state-level initiatives. She discussed Maryland’s reaccreditation efforts and introduced Building a Healthier Maryland, a comprehensive health improvement plan grounded in findings from the latest state health assessment. The plan focuses on five key areas: chronic disease, access to care, women’s health, violence, and behavioral health, with an overarching commitment to health equity.

Dr. Feldman noted, “These priorities reflect Maryland’s commitment to addressing disparities and promoting equity across all public health efforts.”

The full Building a Healthier Maryland plan is available on the Maryland Department of Health’s website, offering details on the strategies aimed at improving community health outcomes statewide.

Interim Report Adoption and Future Meetings

In addition to the monthly meeting, the Commission held a virtual session on November 20 to adopt its statutorily required interim report. Co-chaired by Dr. Boris Lushniak, the meeting addressed key recommendations and updates. A recording of the session can be accessed on the Commission’s website.

The Commission’s next meeting is scheduled for December 5 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Prince George’s County Government facilities. The meeting will be accessible in person and online, with recordings available afterward. Dr. Oluwatosin Olateju will preside as co-chair.
