LEXINGTON PARK, MD — A juvenile is facing adult charges after allegedly stealing a bicycle and displaying a weapon in an incident that unfolded on December 31, 2024, in the Patuxent Crossing neighborhood of Lexington Park.

The victim, also a juvenile, told deputies that he had been playing football with friends when the suspect approached, demanded the bike, and revealed what appeared to be a handgun tucked into his waistband. After reporting the theft to a St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling Great Mills Road, law enforcement began searching the area.

Suspect Detained

Another deputy soon spotted an individual matching the victim’s description in the same neighborhood. Although the suspect denied involvement, the victim later positively identified him. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody.

The juvenile has been charged as an adult with multiple offenses, including:

  • Armed robbery
  • Robbery
  • First-degree assault
  • Second-degree assault
  • Theft of less than $100

The sheriff’s office has not disclosed whether a weapon was recovered during the arrest or if additional evidence was found during the investigation.

Legal Context

Although charged as an adult, Maryland law prohibits law enforcement from releasing the names of juvenile offenders. This protection is intended to ensure the individual’s identity remains confidential throughout the judicial process, even when accused of serious crimes.

Cases involving juveniles charged as adults often prompt broader discussions about accountability and rehabilitation. The balance between addressing public safety and providing opportunities for young offenders to reform remains a significant aspect of Maryland’s juvenile justice system.

Ongoing Patrol Efforts

This incident highlights the importance of proactive patrols in areas like Lexington Park, where law enforcement has been working to address concerns about crime. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office has not released further information about the case, but it encourages residents to report suspicious activity to help maintain community safety.
