CHESAPEAKE BEACH, MD — Town officials in Chesapeake Beach are addressing growing concerns from residents about increased water and sewer rates. Acknowledging the financial strain these changes impose, the Town has pledged to explore solutions with transparency and a commitment to serving the community’s best interests.

In response to residents’ calls for relief, officials considered the possibility of pausing water bills to allow time for further evaluation. However, state and local regulations have made such a pause unfeasible. According to the Town’s Water and Sewer Manual and Town Code, water bills must be issued within 30 days of the end of each quarter, based on appropriated funds and budgeted rates. Additionally, the state-mandated Bay Restoration Fee must be collected quarterly and remitted by the 20th of the month. To comply, the Town must process and issue bills no later than the 15th.

Despite these constraints, Chesapeake Beach is taking steps to address residents’ concerns. The Town plans to hire an independent third-party auditor to review the current rate structure and provide recommendations. Officials believe this unbiased evaluation will be instrumental in identifying potential adjustments or long-term solutions.

“We understand the challenges that rising rates pose to our residents and are committed to working through these issues with urgency and fairness,” Town officials stated in a release. “Your concerns are heard, and we are actively exploring options to provide relief wherever possible.”

While no immediate changes to billing procedures are forthcoming, the Town is encouraging residents who believe they have received inaccurate bills—due to incorrect meter readings or duplicate charges—to contact Town staff for assistance. Officials assured the public that addressing billing discrepancies remains a priority.

The Town also emphasized the importance of transparency throughout the process and committed to keeping residents informed of any updates or developments.

“Thank you for your patience and trust as we navigate these important matters together,” officials said, pledging ongoing communication as they work to find viable solutions for the rising costs.

Residents seeking more information or assistance with their water and sewer bills can contact Chesapeake Beach Town staff directly.
