LA PLATA, Md. — University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (UM Charles Regional), a part of the University of Maryland Medical System, has launched a new outpatient neurology practice to enhance access to specialized care for Charles County and nearby communities.

Board-certified neurologist and epilepsy specialist Dr. Getinet Abebe Kassa has joined UM Charles Regional Medical Group to provide comprehensive care for a range of neurological conditions. Dr. Kassa, who brings decades of expertise to the role, is now accepting patients at the La Plata Medical Pavilion, located at 5 N. La Plata Court, Suite 103.

Dr. Kassa specializes in treating epilepsy, stroke, migraines, movement disorders, and other neurological concerns. His training includes a fellowship in epilepsy at the University of Pennsylvania and a neurology residency at Rutgers University’s New Jersey Medical School. He previously served as stroke director at ChristianaCare’s Union Neurology practice, where he was recognized for advancing stroke prevention and treatment.

“Opening a neurology practice is a critical milestone for UM Charles Regional as we continue to expand access to specialized care,” said Dr. Stephen Smith, Chief Medical Officer at UM Charles Regional. “Dr. Kassa’s dedication to clinical excellence and patient-centered care will significantly improve the quality of life for patients in our region.”

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both neurology and epilepsy, Dr. Kassa is also a member of the American Academy of Neurology. His approach combines advanced diagnostic tools with evidence-based treatments tailored to individual patient needs.

“I believe that every individual is unique, and treatment approaches should be individualized as much as possible,” Dr. Kassa said. “I’ve often been told by patients that my listening skills put them at ease and help them feel relieved.”

Dr. Kassa’s practice reflects his commitment to meeting the growing and diverse needs of Southern Maryland’s population. Community members seeking help with neurological conditions can now access care locally without traveling far for specialized services.
