California, MD – The Southern Maryland Bluegrass Series continues to bring nationally recognized Bluegrass artists to the region, with the Junior Sisk Band and special guests Red Camel Collective set to perform on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Calvert Elks Lodge in Prince Frederick. Hosted by Jay Armsworthy, this marks the fifth concert in the series, featuring award-winning traditional Bluegrass.
Junior Sisk, a widely recognized name in traditional Bluegrass, hails from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and has been a staple in the genre for decades. Influenced early by The Stanley Brothers, Larry Sparks, and Dave Evans, Sisk built his reputation first as a songwriter in the 1990s, penning “Game (I Can’t Win)” and “Tears Are Blinding Me” for the Lonesome River Band. In 1998, he played with Wyatt Rice & Santa Cruz and Blueridge, helping define modern traditional Bluegrass.

He later formed Ramblers Choice, releasing several albums with Rebel Records, including the IBMA Album of the Year-winning “Heart of a Song” in 2012. That same album’s single, “A Far Cry from Lester and Earl,” won IBMA Song of the Year honors. His success continued when he was named IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year in 2013, and he has since earned multiple IBMA and SPBGMA awards.
In addition to his main band, Sisk has been supporting Red Camel Collective, a new Bluegrass project that performs separately while still making appearances during his shows. The group took its name from Sisk’s song “The Man in Red Camels,” a nostalgic tune about a man remembering an old farmer wearing Red Camel brand overalls. Red Camel Collective’s style blends traditional Bluegrass, classic country, and fresh modern sounds. During the concert, Sisk will showcase both his own band and allow Red Camel Collective to take center stage.
The concert begins at 2 p.m., with doors opening at noon. Tickets are $23 per person, with free admission for children under 12 with a paid adult. The Calvert Elks will serve hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings from noon until 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door, but those who prefer to pay in advance can do so by visiting www.somdbluegrass.com or calling 301-737-3004.
The Southern Maryland Bluegrass Series will continue with singer-songwriter Donna Ulisse and The Poor Mountain Boys making their first appearance on March 23. The series concludes with Missy Raines and her band Alleghany. Raines, a ten-time recipient of the Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year award, will close out the season with her distinctive sound.
