The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) baseball team opened its 2025 season with an impressive doubleheader sweep over Virginia Peninsula Community College on Sunday, February 9, at War Memorial Stadium. The Hawks shut out Virginia Peninsula 2-0 in the first game before cruising to an 11-5 victory in the second.
The season opener showcased the strength of CSM’s returning players and new talent as they demonstrated dominant pitching, solid defense, and a productive offense.

CSM entered the season with high expectations, boasting a roster featuring experienced veterans and promising newcomers. The team, which spent the offseason sharpening their skills, is set to be a strong competitor in the Maryland Juco baseball scene.
Game One: Hawks Secure 2-0 Shutout Victory
The Hawks relied on their pitching staff to set the tone in their first game of the season, holding Virginia Peninsula scoreless through seven innings. CSM’s defense backed up their pitchers with steady play, limiting scoring opportunities and keeping the Gators off the board.
Veteran infielders Yuni Pena and Davey Reynolds anchored the defense, making crucial plays to preserve the shutout. The Hawks’ outfield, led by returning players Blaine Brashear, Waldy Reyes, Joaquin Velez, and Bryson Hutzell, also contributed with strong defensive positioning and timely catches.
At the plate, CSM managed to push across two runs, providing just enough offense to secure the win. The team’s disciplined approach and ability to capitalize on scoring chances played a key role in the opening victory.
Game Two: Explosive Offense Powers 11-5 Win
The Hawks’ bats came alive in the second game of the doubleheader, as they put up 11 runs to complete the sweep. Sophomore first baseman Tyree Claxton delivered a standout performance, showcasing his power at the plate and solid defense at first base.
CSM’s infield, which also features Jared Harry, Dorian Arraiz, and Caleb Bean, played a crucial role in keeping the team’s momentum going throughout the game. Harry’s quick reflexes and strong arm helped keep the Gators in check, while Arraiz and Bean added flexibility with their ability to play multiple positions.
On the mound, the Hawks’ pitching staff kept Virginia Peninsula from mounting a significant comeback. With the defense making key plays behind them, the pitchers controlled the tempo and helped CSM maintain a comfortable lead.
Behind the plate, veteran catcher Henry Itani played a crucial role in handling the pitching staff and controlling the game. His leadership and defensive skills provided stability to the Hawks’ battery.
Looking Ahead
With a 2-0 start to the season, CSM will look to build on its early success as it prepares for the next set of games. The mix of returning talent and new additions gives the team depth and versatility heading into the remainder of the season.
The Hawks will continue to rely on strong pitching, a dynamic offense, and veteran leadership as they navigate the competitive Maryland Juco baseball schedule.
