Joann, the national fabric and crafting retailer, is closing more than half of its remaining stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year. The company has requested court approval to shut down approximately 533 of its 800 stores across the United States. Among the affected locations, several Joann stores in Southern Maryland are slated to close, leaving customers in the region with fewer in-person options for fabric, sewing, and craft supplies.

The company announced that the stores at 22576 MacArthur Boulevard in California, 521 North Solomon’s Island Road in Prince Frederick, and 15920 Crain Highway Southeast in Brandywine will be among those closing. These stores have served as key resources for local crafters, quilters, and DIY hobbyists, making their impending closures a significant change for the community.

A Joann spokesperson acknowledged the impact of the decision, stating that while the company recognizes the difficulties it will cause employees and customers, the restructuring process is necessary for the business to move forward. In a statement, the company said, “This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers, and all of the communities we serve.”

Joann’s financial struggles have continued over the past year, leading to this second bankruptcy filing. In April 2024, the company completed a restructuring that resulted in it being delisted from the U.S. stock exchange and becoming a private company. The latest filing, submitted on January 15, 2025, seeks court approval in Delaware to begin selling off substantially all of its assets.

Southern Maryland residents who have relied on Joann for crafting and sewing supplies will now need to look for alternative shopping options. While Joann will still offer online ordering, the closure of its physical stores means that customers will no longer have the ability to browse materials in person or participate in in-store events and workshops.

The store closures will also result in job losses for employees in the region. Joann has not yet provided a specific timeline for the shutdowns, but affected workers are expected to receive formal notices as the process moves forward. The company has not announced whether liquidation sales will take place at these locations before closing.

Joann customers in Southern Maryland who want to stock up on supplies are encouraged to visit their local stores while they remain open. More updates on the closures and restructuring efforts are expected in the coming weeks as Joann works through its bankruptcy proceedings.
