BOWIE, Md. — The Chesapeake Baysox, in collaboration with The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA), held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Prince George’s Stadium to mark the start of a $50 million renovation project. Announced on January 29, 2025, this transformative investment aims to modernize the 32-year-old facility, enhancing player development and community engagement while solidifying its role as a sports tourism hub in Prince George’s County.

The event drew notable figures, including baseball legend and Baltimore Orioles owner Cal Ripken, MSA Chair Craig Thompson, Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara Jackson, M-NCPPC Deputy Director Steve Carter, Bowie Mayor Tim Adams, and Baltimore Orioles executives Mike Elias (Executive Vice President and General Manager) and Kent Qualls (Director of Minor League Operations). Their presence underscored the project’s significance as a partnership between state, county, local, and private stakeholders.

“The Maryland Stadium Authority is delighted that The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Chesapeake Baysox have successfully taken steps to utilize state funds and our services to invest in Prince George’s Stadium,” said Craig Thompson. “Players, coaches, and fans will cheer the improvements to this facility and ensure it remains a top sports tourism and entertainment destination in Maryland for years to come.” The upgrades, led by design-build team Gilbane and design partner EwingCole, with assistance from the Canopy Team, include a state-of-the-art performance center with enhanced batting arenas, primarily for the Baysox but with plans to expand community access in collaboration with M-NCPPC.

Greg Baroni, CEO and Managing Partner of Attain Sports (the Baysox’s owner), emphasized the dual focus: “We are thrilled to break ground on these much-anticipated improvements, which will not only enhance the development experience for our players but also provide new avenues for community engagement.” Mike Elias of the Orioles added, “With these renovations, Prince George’s Stadium will become one of the premier ballparks in the league—a true asset and extension of our organization,” highlighting its role in developing talent and growing Orioles fandom in Maryland.

The project also includes two new high-definition videoboards for the 2025 season, previously announced by M-NCPPC and Attain Sports, to enhance the fan experience with dynamic visuals and interactive content during games and events. “Modernizing the stadium is more than an upgrade—it’s an investment in our Prince George’s County community and a catalyst for economic growth,” said Bill Tyler, Director of M-NCPPC’s Department of Parks and Recreation, noting its potential to drive opportunities for local businesses in Bowie, a city of 58,000 residents.
