RICHMOND, Va. — The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, 4-1 on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Strong pitching and timely hitting powered the Baysox (6-4) to their sixth win of the season, nearly shutting out the Flying Squirrels (2-8).
Ryan Long, Chesapeake’s starting right-hander, delivered a standout performance, tossing five scoreless innings to earn his first win of 2025 (1-0). The 25-year-old allowed three hits, struck out three, and issued no walks, lowering his ERA to 1.95 in six career starts against Richmond. Long has recorded 11 strikeouts against two walks in his first two outings this season, showcasing his command on the mound.

The Baysox broke through in the fourth inning against Richmond’s left-handed starter Seth Lonsway (1-1). With two outs, outfielder Douglas Hodo III launched a two-run homer, his first of the season, giving Chesapeake a 2-0 lead. Hodo also drew two walks, bringing his season total to 10, the second-most in the Eastern League, per Minor League Baseball stats.
Chesapeake extended its lead in the fifth inning after a costly error by Richmond shortstop Aeverson Arteaga. With the bases loaded and one out, Creed Willems hit a grounder that Arteaga misplayed while attempting a double play, allowing two runs to score. The two RBIs were Willems’ first of the season, pushing the Baysox lead to 4-0.
Reliever Levi Wells nearly preserved a shutout, pitching 3.2 innings for his first Double-A save. Wells allowed a lone run in the ninth on an RBI double by Arteaga, finishing with four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts over four innings. The run snapped Chesapeake’s bid for its first shutout of the season.
Lonsway took the loss for Richmond, surrendering two runs on Hodo’s homer. The Flying Squirrels struggled offensively, managing seven hits and striking out six times. Richmond’s early-season woes continue, with the team dropping to 2-8, tied for the worst record in the Eastern League’s Southwest Division.
The game, played before 3,214 fans at The Diamond, marked the second of a six-game series between the teams. Chesapeake’s pitching staff, ranked fourth in the Eastern League with a 3.45 team ERA, held Richmond to one run or fewer for the second time this season.
