Nicholas Haylock, a junior from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, was named the United East Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on April 22, 2025, for his standout performances at two recent meets. The Odenton native, who competes in sprints and hurdles, earned the honor after setting a school record and achieving strong finishes at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet and the Johns Hopkins University/Loyola University Maryland Invite.
Haylock’s highlight came at the Morgan State meet, where he finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 58.02 seconds. This performance ranks first in the United East Conference and 18th in the Mid-Atlantic region, showcasing his dominance in the event. He followed this achievement at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invite, contributing to a ninth-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:44.98. Individually, he placed 14th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.60 seconds), 33rd in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best 11.76 seconds, and 43rd in the 200-meter dash (24.34 seconds). His 100-meter dash time ranks 10th in the conference, while his 200-meter result is 16th.

“This is Haylock’s first career outdoor weekly award and third of the 2024-25 track & field season as he garnered the United East Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award twice (Dec. 10, Feb. 18),” the conference office announced.
The 6-foot-1 junior, a graduate of Meade High School, has emerged as a key performer for the Seahawks. His versatility across sprints, hurdles, and relays has bolstered St. Mary’s standing in the conference. The United East recognized four other men’s outdoor track athletes this season: Collin Fitzgerald (St. Mary’s, March 25), David Helms (Lancaster Bible, April 1 and 8), and Mel Cobbler (Carlow, April 15).
St. Mary’s College, located in St. Mary’s City, competes in the NCAA Division III United East Conference, which includes nine member institutions across Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The Seahawks’ track and field program has gained attention for its emerging talent, with Haylock and Fitzgerald both earning weekly honors this spring. Haylock’s school record in the 400-meter hurdles marks a significant milestone for the program, reflecting its growing competitiveness.
The Morgan State Legacy Meet, held annually in Baltimore, draws top regional talent, while the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invite is a prestigious event featuring Division I, II, and III programs. Haylock’s ability to compete at these meets underscores his potential as the postseason approaches. His personal-best 11.76 in the 100-meter dash highlights his speed, while his 110-meter hurdles performance shows his technical skill.
The Seahawks are now preparing for the 2025 United East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set for May 3-4 at Gallaudet University’s Thomas O. Berg Track in Washington, D.C. The two-day event will pit St. Mary’s against conference rivals, with Haylock expected to contend for top finishes in the 400-meter hurdles and other events. The championships offer a chance for the junior to build on his record-setting season and help the Seahawks vie for a strong team placement.
Haylock’s award caps a week of impressive performances, positioning him as a leader for St. Mary’s as they head into the conference championships. His teammates and coaches will look to his speed and versatility to drive the team’s success in the final meet of the season.
