PORT TOBACCO, Md. — The Charles County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) will take the stage at the 16th Annual Port Tobacco Market Day on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 12 p.m., delivering a vibrant, free concert open to the public. Held at the historic Port Tobacco Courthouse (8430 Commerce St.), the performance will feature music from “Avengers,” popular fiddle tunes, Pachelbel’s Canon, and the 1812 Overture, among other selections. Market Day, a celebration of local history and culture, offers a fitting backdrop for the youth ensemble’s showcase.
CCYO, a cornerstone of the region’s arts community, comprises four ensembles: Prelude Strings for beginners, Encore Strings and Encore Band for intermediate players, and the Charles County Youth Orchestra for advanced musicians. Serving students from Charles, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Anne Arundel counties, CCYO fosters musical growth and community engagement. “This concert is a wonderful opportunity for our young musicians to share their talent with the public,” said a CCYO representative.

The May 3 performance kicks off a busy season for CCYO. Upcoming concerts, all free and open to the public, include:

- June 14, at ArtsFest on Indian Head Village Green.
- June 21, Annual Concerto Competition Concert at Christ Church, La Plata.

- July 19, 20, 26, and 27, 8 p.m., CCYO Chamber Music Festival concerts at Christ Church, La Plata.

Recently, CCYO has garnered regional recognition. The Charles County Arts Alliance featured the group in an online film, and WTOP radio highlighted their work. Two CCYO string quartets were finalists in the Washington Performing Arts Society’s Misbin Chamber Music Competition in Washington, D.C., showcasing the ensemble’s competitive edge. These achievements reflect CCYO’s commitment to excellence and its role in nurturing young talent.
Supported by grants from the Charles County Charitable Trust, Charles County Arts Alliance, Maryland State Arts Council, and individual donations, CCYO provides accessible music education and performance opportunities. The organization’s diverse repertoire, spanning classical, cinematic, and folk genres, appeals to audiences of all ages. At Market Day, attendees can expect a lively set that blends iconic film scores with traditional and classical pieces, performed by students ranging from beginners to advanced players.
