GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host “Women on the Water,” a free introductory boating and fishing workshop for women and girls aged 12 and older, on May 7, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Seneca Creek State Park. Open to anyone 12 and older, the event aims to teach new and returning boaters and anglers the basics of fishing and kayaking. Registration is available on the DNR’s “Women on the Water” event page.

The workshop begins with an overview of boating opportunities in Maryland, followed by hands-on fishing and kayaking instruction led by DNR staff. Participants will learn fish identification, how to rig a fishing rod, and casting techniques, with all fishing gear provided. No prior experience is required, making the event accessible to beginners and those looking to refresh their skills.

After land-based instruction, participants can paddle on Clopper Lake in kayaks supplied by the DNR, complete with required safety equipment. Kayak instructors will teach basic paddling techniques and guide attendees during an evening of fishing and kayaking. Those preferring to stay on shore can practice casting into the lake. The event offers a supportive environment to build confidence in outdoor recreational activities.

Anglers aged 16 and older must have a valid Maryland non-tidal/freshwater fishing license to fish in Clopper Lake, as licensing will not be available at the event. Licenses can be purchased online, at DNR service centers, or at sport license agent retailers [dnr.maryland.gov]. Participants are encouraged to secure their licenses in advance to fully engage in the fishing activities.

Seneca Creek State Park, located in Gaithersburg, spans 6,300 acres and features Clopper Lake, a prime spot for fishing and boating. The park’s trails, picnic areas, and recreational facilities make it an ideal setting for the workshop, which aligns with the DNR’s mission to promote outdoor access and conservation. The event is designed to encourage women and girls to explore Maryland’s natural resources while learning valuable skills.

The “Women on the Water” program reflects the DNR’s commitment to inclusive outdoor education, offering a welcoming space for participants to connect with nature. By providing equipment and expert instruction, the workshop removes barriers to entry, ensuring attendees can focus on learning and enjoyment. The event also highlights the importance of fishing and boating as sustainable recreational activities in Maryland’s state parks.

Registration is required to attend, and spaces are limited. Interested participants should visit the DNR’s event page to secure their spot. The workshop is expected to draw a diverse group, fostering a sense of community among those passionate about the outdoors. With its combination of practical instruction and hands-on experience, “Women on the Water” promises an engaging evening at Seneca Creek State Park.
