WALDORF, Md., June 18, 2025 — The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs overwhelmed the Charleston Dirty Birds with an 18-7 victory on June 17, 2025, at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Blue Crabs unleashed a barrage of 21 hits, including five extra-base hits, to secure a commanding win in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs.
The Blue Crabs struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning. John Taylor led off with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice by Ethan Wilson. Jamari Baylor doubled, and Giovanni Digiacomo’s single drove him in, giving Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead. The second inning saw the Blue Crabs erupt for five runs. Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, followed by singles from Barrera and Dexter, pushing the score to 7-0.
Charleston responded in the fourth inning when Chad Sedio launched a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, narrowing the gap to 7-2. However, the Blue Crabs answered with a seven-run fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Ethan Wilson crushed a grand slam, his seventh home run, making it 11-2. De Aza added a solo home run, and additional singles from Baylor and Digiacomo extended the lead to 14-2.
Sedio hit his second home run in the fifth, a solo shot, and Zach Daniels followed with a two-run homer, his sixth, bringing the score to 14-5. The Blue Crabs continued their offensive onslaught in the sixth, scoring two runs on singles by Taylor and Wilson. In the seventh, De Aza and Baylor drove in two more runs, finalizing the score at 18-7.
Wilson led the Blue Crabs, going 3-for-6 with five RBIs, while De Aza was 2-for-6 with four RBIs. Brett Barrera went 4-for-6, and Digiacomo reached base five times. For the Dirty Birds, Sedio’s two home runs and Daniels’ 3-for-5 performance with two RBIs were highlights, but their 13 hits couldn’t match Southern Maryland’s output.
Garrett Martin earned the win for the Blue Crabs, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits. Jonh Henriquez took the loss for Charleston, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in two innings. The game, lasting 3 hours and 26 minutes, was played under cloudy, humid conditions with a temperature of 78 degrees before 1,998 fans.
The Blue Crabs improved to 26-20-0, strengthening their position in the Atlantic League’s South Division. The Dirty Birds fell to 23-23-0, facing an uphill battle to regain momentum. This high-scoring affair underscores Southern Maryland’s offensive prowess and sets the stage for continued competition in the 2025 season.
