The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) received the 2024 “Member of the Year” award from The Patuxent Partnership (TPP), a Southern Maryland nonprofit focused on advancing science, technology, and STEM workforce development. The recognition was announced on June 3 during TPP’s Annual Dinner in Historic St. Mary’s City, attended by over 300 guests, including Vice Admiral Carl Chebi, Commander of NAVAIR.
CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson accepted the honor, highlighting the collaboration’s role in addressing regional needs. “The College of Southern Maryland is incredibly honored to be recognized as The Patuxent Partnership Member of the Year for 2024,” said Wilson. “This partnership has enabled us to think bigger and respond quicker to the needs facing our communities.”

A key outcome of the partnership is the enhancement of CSM’s cybersecurity training facilities. TPP’s funding supported upgrades to the Barbara Ives Cyber Lab at the Leonardtown Campus, enabling the launch of the Cyber Workforce Accelerator Program. “A shining example is the Patuxent Partnership’s support this past year to expand and upgrade CSM’s cyber labs, which directly led to our ability to quickly accept the statewide initiative and stand up the Cyber Workforce Accelerator Program,” Wilson said. This program equips students with skills to meet the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals.
TPP’s contributions extend beyond cybersecurity. The organization has provided scholarships for STEM students, supported innovative programming, and backed initiatives like CSM’s acclaimed Robotics Team. Wilson emphasized that these efforts “directly impact our work to expand access, build momentum, and create mobility for our students.” The partnership has strengthened CSM’s ability to prepare graduates for careers in high-tech industries critical to Southern Maryland’s economy.
TPP Executive Director Bonnie Green lauded CSM’s role in the region. “CSM is the heart of Southern Maryland,” said Green. “Their work across STEM education, workforce development, and community engagement is a model of what strong partnerships can achieve.” The award underscores CSM’s leadership in fostering educational and economic growth.
The collaboration aligns with TPP’s mission to connect academia, industry, and government to drive innovation. CSM’s upgraded cyber facilities and expanded STEM programs address workforce shortages, benefiting local businesses and enhancing community resilience. The college’s efforts ensure students gain practical skills for emerging fields, positioning Southern Maryland as a technology hub.
