LA PLATA, Md. — Christopher Ripley, a professor of business at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), received the 2025 Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Teaching Excellence Award at the ACBSP annual conference in Las Vegas, held June 19-22. The award recognizes Ripley’s innovative teaching methods, dedication to student success, and contributions to the business education field.

“As someone who’s dedicated decades to both business and education, this recognition is deeply meaningful,” Ripley said in accepting the award. “To me, teaching excellence means more than delivering content, it’s about sparking curiosity, empowering students to think critically, and helping them see their place in the world of business and beyond.”

The ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award, presented annually, honors classroom teachers at degree-granting institutions based on three criteria: teaching and learning, professional development, and institutional and community commitment. The award includes a trophy, a waived conference registration fee, and $500. Ripley was nominated by Business Department Chair Tony Stout, who praised his adaptability to evolving industry trends.

“He addressed a critical gap in education by mastering AI’s role in business. He integrated it into his teaching, ensuring students are future-ready,” Stout said. “His commitment to excellence and preparing students for the evolving business world is most deserving of this award.”

Ripley declared 2024 his “Year of AI Learning,” attending AI-focused professional development sessions and redesigning his courses to incorporate cutting-edge AI tools and practices. His updated curriculum features interactive assignments and practical AI demonstrations, equipping students with skills for the modern business landscape. This initiative reflects his commitment to preparing students for a technology-driven economy.

Beyond the classroom, Ripley spearheaded the establishment of CSM’s chapter of the Kappa Beta Delta Honor Society, Delta Phi, which inducted its first cohort in 2023. The international society invites business students in the top 20 percent of their class to join. In 2024, Ripley was invited to serve on the Kappa Beta Delta International Board of Directors. The board noted, “Although you are a relatively new KBD Chapter Advisor, we are impressed with how vital your chapter is already under your leadership.”

Ripley’s teaching philosophy emphasizes fostering curiosity and problem-solving skills. He highlighted a student who developed a business plan for a tattoo parlor in an introductory class. Now a partner in a local shop while still at CSM, she excels in AI-driven assignments and leads her peers. “This award is a reflection of moments like that, where education sparks confidence, growth, and real-world success,” Ripley said.

The recognition underscores CSM’s commitment to innovative education and community impact. Ripley’s efforts have strengthened the college’s business programs, preparing students for careers in a rapidly changing world. For more information about Ripley, visit CSM’s Faculty Profile. Ripley’s award aligns with CSM’s mission to provide relevant, high-quality education. The college has a history of fostering faculty excellence, with previous recognitions for innovative teaching in fields like technology and health sciences. Ripley’s integration of AI and leadership in honor societies position CSM as a leader in business education, benefiting students and the broader Southern Maryland community.
