The St. Mary’s College of Maryland field hockey team dropped two non-conference matches over the weekend, falling 2-0 to York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday and 4-0 to No. 21 Washington & Lee University in Sunday’s home-opener, extending the Seahawks’ losing streak to three games.
Saturday: York (Pa.) 2, SMCM 0
York wasted no time at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium’s road counterpart, with Kate Egan scoring just 36 seconds into the game off a feed from Hannah Downs. St. Mary’s held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the half and withstood an 11-shot third-quarter barrage, with senior goalkeeper Caroline McDonald turning away eight of those attempts. York’s Claire Burrows finally doubled the lead at 54:15, taking a pass from Olivia Miller for her first goal of the season. McDonald finished with a career-best 16 saves, but York out-shot St. Mary’s 26-3, including a 19-1 edge in shots on goal, and held a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners. York improved to 6-0 in its last six meetings with the Seahawks and now leads the all-time series 29-11.
Sunday: No. 21 Washington & Lee 4, SMCM 0
The Seahawks’ home-opener went similarly, as Washington & Lee scored in each quarter. Charlotte Dreany opened the scoring less than two minutes in off a Lauren Zoota assist, and Margaret Cover doubled the lead before halftime on a put-back off a blocked cross. Britty Page made it 3-0 in the third quarter, and Cecilia Hartford finished the scoring at 54:53 off a Margaret Scheurer feed. The Generals out-shot St. Mary’s 22-3 and held an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. McDonald made seven saves in 45 minutes before giving way to junior Sophia Kent, who allowed one goal in relief. Sophomore Josie Mascolo led St. Mary’s in shots in both games, recording the team’s only shot on goal in Sunday’s contest. Washington & Lee, which has now won the last two meetings in the series, improved to 9-3 all-time against the Seahawks.
The results follow the team’s first loss of the season to Bridgewater (Va.) earlier in the week. St. Mary’s returns to action Sept. 17, hosting Randolph-Macon (3-2) at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium at 5 p.m.
