The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation has completed an 18-hole disc golf course at Ward Farm Recreation & Nature Park in Dunkirk, expanding a project that opened with just 10 holes two years ago.
The course was designed by local professional disc golfers Ryan Laur and his father, Matt Laur, members of the Southern Maryland Disc Golf Association who volunteered their time to bring the course to the park. The course first opened to the public in September 2024 with 10 holes and has since grown to its full 18-hole layout.
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but players throw a flying disc from a tee area toward an elevated metal basket instead of hitting a ball with clubs. The Ward Farm course is almost entirely wooded, making it one of only a handful of wooded disc golf courses in the region, and it remains the only free public disc golf course in Calvert County.
Ward Farm Recreation & Nature Park, located at 10455 Ward Road in Dunkirk, has been developed in phases since county commissioners broke ground on the site in 2018, with plans that ultimately call for athletic fields, paved pathways, nature trails, boardwalks, a nature center and other amenities.
