St. Mary’s Volleyball Falls to Mary Washington

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team fell 3-0 to Mary Washington on Tuesday evening, dropping a road match at Ron Rosner Arena in Fredericksburg, Virginia, by set scores of 27-25, 25-21 and 25-19.

The loss drops St. Mary’s to 7-5 on the season in a non-conference matchup; Mary Washington improves to 4-3 with the win.

Maya Mauro led the Seahawks offensively with 11 kills, while Julia Bobrowski — a St. Mary’s County native out of Leonardtown by way of California, Maryland — added nine kills and hit .222. Vlada Costenco contributed four kills, while Hope Parrish finished with three.

Lauren Panageotou paced the St. Mary’s offense with 16 assists, while Camilla Galeano added 10 assists and three service aces. Stella Marrero anchored the defensive effort with 15 digs, while Mauro and Panageotou each recorded six digs.

The Seahawks finished with 33 kills, 45 digs and five service aces, hitting .125 as a team on 104 attempts. Mary Washington countered with 41 kills and eight aces on a .196 hitting percentage, and the tight opening set — a 27-25 win for the Eagles — proved decisive; St. Mary’s never led by more than a point in either of the final two sets. The two teams finished even in blocks, 6-6.

The result is St. Mary’s first meeting with Mary Washington this season. It’s the Seahawks’ fifth loss of the year, following a stretch that also included back-to-back wins over Eastern Mennonite and Sweet Briar earlier this month, a sign of the up-and-down nonconference slate St. Mary’s has played through September.

St. Mary’s will return to action Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Seahawks travel to Cairn University.
