St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s open sailing team stayed on home water last weekend. The Seahawks placed eighth and 11th in a 16-team field at their own SMC Open on Sept. 26-27, while some team members sailed at the Navy Fall Scrimmage in Annapolis.
Georgetown swept the top two spots at the SMC Open, according to Old Dominion’s recap. Navy took third, followed by Fordham, a second Navy team and Penn. Navy described a rainy, windy weekend on the St. Mary’s River.
The same forecast of high winds forced the postponement of the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Match Race Championship. The race for the Intrepid Trophy has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 12.
Strong in Division A
The Seahawks’ A-division pairs carried the weekend. Both finished in the top three of their division, each winning a race along the way.
Seahawks 1 placed eighth with 237 points. First-year skipper Davide Bazzoni (Miami, Fla./MAST Academy) and junior crew Emery Strockbine (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) scored 76 points to take second in Division A. The pair posted four top-two finishes, including a win in Race 5A.
Seahawks 2 placed 11th with 264 points. Senior skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) and junior crew Elise Jones (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester) placed third in Division A with 79 points on the strength of five top-three finishes, including a win in Race 9A. Jones helped the Seahawks win three races in Division A at the Chesapeake Open at Navy a week earlier.
Division B
The B-division boats had a tougher weekend. Sophomore skipper Lilly Rippel (Norfolk, Va./Maury) and first-year crew Emma Parks (New Orleans, La./Willow) finished 13th for Seahawks 1 with 161 points. Their best finish was fifth in Race 10B.
Sophomore skipper Molly Dowling (Lothian, Md./Southern) placed 15th for Seahawks 2 with 185 points, sailing with three crews: seniors Jaden Talay (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) and Grace-Anne Phillips (Stevensville, Md./Gunston), and first-year Makayla Hansen (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown). Dowling and Hansen posted the boat’s best finish, 10th in Race 13B.
