St. Mary’s County Government has hired a communications director who spent the past eight years across the Patuxent River in Calvert County.

The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County announced the appointment of Eryn Lowe, who takes the job Wednesday, Oct. 7. She will lead media relations, digital communications, emergency messaging and community outreach for county government, and work with departments to coordinate what the county tells the public, according to the county’s announcement.

Lowe joined Calvert County Government in October 2018 as a communications program specialist, was promoted to deputy director of the Department of Communications & Media Relations in 2020, and became its director effective July 28, 2023, the Chronicle reported at the time. Before that she spent 11 years in the credit union industry handling marketing and business development, and she holds an English degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The St. Mary’s announcement describes “more than 20 years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, marketing, and community engagement, including extensive experience in local government.” It credits her with advising executive leadership on high-profile initiatives, managing communications teams, and leading public information efforts during emergencies. It does not name her previous employer.

“Her extensive communications experience, leadership, and understanding of local government will be valuable as we continue working to provide timely, accurate, and accessible information to our residents, both in our day-to-day operations and during emergencies,” Commissioner President Randy Guy said.

“I am honored to join St. Mary’s County Government and look forward to working with the Commissioners, County leadership, staff, and the community,” Lowe said. “I am excited for the opportunity to support transparent and effective communication and help ensure residents remain informed and engaged with their County Government.”

A post with a short list of holders

Lowe is at least the third person to hold the title in the current era of the office. The commissioners named Alisa Casas communications director in April 2019, effective May 6, from a background at MAG Aerospace and, before that, NAVAIR’s F/A-18 program. In November 2022 the county appointed Jenna Guzman, who came from the St. Mary’s County Health Department and started Nov. 29.

County news releases listed Guzman as communications director, and as station manager of the county’s government television channel, as recently as Aug. 25, 2026. The announcement of Lowe’s appointment does not say why the position opened, whether Guzman has left county government, or who has been handling the office in the meantime. It also does not say whether Lowe will take over the television station role.

The county’s Public Information Office also lists a communications coordinator and video production staff.

What happens next at Calvert

Calvert County advertised a Communications and Media Relations Director opening on Aug. 24, with applications due Sept. 11 and a salary range of $135,000 to $160,000. Calvert has not announced a successor, and its department web page does not list a director.

St. Mary’s commissioners also filled two other department head posts this fall, approving contracts for the directors of Public Works & Transportation and Economic Development.
