ST. MARY’S CITY — St. Mary’s College of Maryland swept the United East Conference’s weekly field hockey awards Monday, with senior forward Emma Mastrangelo named Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Sophia Kent named Defensive Player of the Week.
The conference honors announced Oct. 19 cover a 2-0 week for the Seahawks, both wins against United East opponents, that lifted St. Mary’s to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Mastrangelo, a Riverton, N.J., native who played at Cinnaminson High School, scored three goals in conference play during the week. She closed out a 5-0 road shutout of Wilson College on Oct. 13 with the Seahawks’ final goal, then scored both goals in a 2-1 Senior Day win over Immaculata University on Oct. 17. It was the first multi-goal game of her college career and her first weekly conference award.

Kent, of Chesterville, Md., and a graduate of The Gunston School, needed only one save to post the shutout at Wilson. The award is her third Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, after back-to-back selections Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, and the eighth weekly honor of her career.
The sweep extends a strong season for St. Mary’s in the weekly voting. Sophomores Julie Presgraves (Sept. 21) and Josie Mascolo (Sept. 28) earned the offensive award earlier this fall, and Caroline McDonald took the defensive honor Sept. 14. Mascolo, a Leonardtown native, scored twice in a win earlier this month.
Kent stayed busy after the award period. On Oct. 20, she made 18 saves as third-ranked Christopher Newport blanked the Seahawks 4-0.
Up next, the Seahawks return to United East play at home against Lancaster Bible College (5-8, 3-2 UEC) at 4:30 p.m. today, Oct. 21, at Jaime L. Roberts Stadium. The game doubles as the program’s Gold Rush and Morgan’s Message game.
