SALISBURY — Alexandra Sarrach gave St. Mary’s College of Maryland an answer, but Salisbury had the last word.

Callie Chesney scored in the 72nd minute to lift Salisbury past the Seahawks 2-1 in a nonconference women’s soccer game Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium, according to the SMCM Athletics recap and box score.

The loss drops St. Mary’s to 6-8-3 overall. The Seahawks remain 5-2-0 in United East Conference play with the regular season winding down. Salisbury improved to 4-10-1.

How it unfolded

Salisbury struck first in the 13th minute when Skylar Williams finished a pass from Brooke Spadin.

St. Mary’s answered 15 minutes later. Junior defender Brooke Hall found Sarrach, a sophomore forward from Crofton, who scored in the 28th minute to tie the game 1-1. It was Sarrach’s only shot on goal of the night.

The teams went to halftime level, and the Seahawks held the Sea Gulls off until midway through the second half. In the 72nd minute, Chesney scored off assists from Lillian Hutchings and Sophia Pierce for the winner.

Salisbury controlled much of the run of play, outshooting St. Mary’s 17-6 and putting seven shots on goal to the Seahawks’ four. Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Brown of Arnold played all 90 minutes and made four saves to keep St. Mary’s within reach.

Bryan is one of several Southern Maryland players on the Seahawks roster, which also includes Leonardtown graduate Addy Campbell, who scored in the Seahawks’ 4-0 senior day win over Cedar Crest, and Calvert County players from Calvert and Northern high schools, according to the team roster.

Earlier this month, two Leonardtown graduates connected for a goal in a 2-1 win over Penn State Berks.
