SOLOMONS — Drivers crossing the Gov. Thomas Johnson Bridge between Calvert and St. Mary’s counties Sunday morning will share a single lane with flaggers directing traffic.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will close one of the MD 4 bridge’s two lanes starting at 6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. The lane will reopen no later than 2 p.m., weather permitting, according to an SHA advisory forwarded by St. Mary’s County Government.

Crews will replace reflectors and clean the drainage system and the bridge deck, the driving surface. Flaggers and portable variable message signs will guide drivers through the work zone, and the message signs will give advance notice.

Second try

The same maintenance was first scheduled for early October and was canceled because of weather. The Chronicle reported that original closure on Oct. 1.

The Patuxent River crossing is the only direct link between the two counties, carrying commuters to Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Lexington Park from Calvert, along with weekend traffic headed to Solomons. With only one lane open, drivers moving in both directions will take turns through the work zone, so allow extra time during the closure window.

Sunday’s job is the latest of several maintenance projects on the span this fall. SHA crews began fence work on the bridge in September.

Tips for drivers

SHA asks drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits and avoid distractions in the work zone. Motorists can dial #77 on a mobile phone for roadside assistance. Questions can go to the SHA District 5 office at 410-841-1000 or 1-800-331-5603. Real-time travel information is available at chart.maryland.gov and roads.maryland.gov.
