WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for December:

“With 146,000 new private sector jobs created in December, our economy continues to demonstrate its resilience.  However, in spite of claims by the President, the first year of his administration saw the slowest job growth since 2010. While stock market surges are a welcome sign, if they do not translate into better wages and faster job creation, many Americans will be left behind. That is why it is so unfortunate that Congressional Republicans passed massive tax cuts for the wealthy while raising taxes on the middle class.  Their tax plan is the opposite of what Congress ought to be doing to ensure that gains for our financial markets benefit average Americans.

“Democrats are offering a better deal, and as we look ahead to 2018 our focus will continue to be on identifying and promoting ways to sustainably grow our economy and make sure such growth benefits all Americans.  This year, we will continue our Make It In America listening tour to hear directly from Americans across the country about how best to ensure they can get ahead.”
