This week was full of excitement. Two of my bills passed out of Senate committees! The governor vetoed three bills and the Maryland General Assembly voted to override them. Read on to find out more.
Minimum Wage Bill-HB0166*
The bill to raise minimum wage to $15 passed in the House and the Senate and was vetoed by Governor Hogan. However, the House and Senate chose to override the Governor’s veto and now the bill is passed into law. Being pro-business, I did not vote for this bill and voted to sustain the Governor’s veto.
Education Bill-HB0437*
In 2016, Governor Hogan made an executive order that requires schools to start after Labor Day, and end before June 15th. HB437, which passed in the House and Senate, allows local boards of education to set start and end dates each year. Overwhelmingly, many families like having summer vacation between Labor Day and June 15th, so Governor Hogan chose to veto HB437. The teachers’ union and many school systems lobbied in favor of HB437, so the House and State voted override the Governor’s veto. I voted to sustain the Governor’s veto, however, HB437 has now passed into law.
Alcohol and Tobacco Commission- HB1052
This bill creates an Alcohol and Tobacco Commission whose purpose is to study how the law affects alcohol and tobacco, and mandate best practices. While I originally supported this bill, I do not support the veto override and voted to sustain Governor Hogan’s veto of HB1052.
In Remembrance
March 20th marked the one year anniversary of the terrible incident at Great Mills High School which cost the life of Jaelynn Willey and injured student Austin Rollins. The delegation members, along with many others across the state and in Southern Maryland, wore teal wristbands and offered a moment of silence. We will never forget the tragedy of that day and have pursued legislation that will make our schools safer.
