News Release, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs

Waldorf, MD – The Blue Crabs came into game two of the series with the Patriots looking to win back-to-back games.  Daryl Thompson (W, 11-6) seized that opportunity, recording his ninth consecutive victory by a score of 5-2.

David Holmberg (L, 1-3), Somerset’s starter, struggled in the bottom of the third inning.  Tony Thomas launched a double to left to lead off the inning. The next batter, Josh McAdams, roped a base hit into right field, scoring Thomas and putting the Blue Crabs ahead 1-0.

The Blue Crabs held their 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.  Cory Vaughn advanced to first on a hit by pitch to start the frame.  Charlie Valerio then reached on a sac bunt and went to second following a throwing error. With runners on second and third, Tony Thomas came through again with a single up the middle, scoring both runners and giving the Blue Crabs a 3-0 lead.  Thomas later came around to score, giving Southern Maryland a 4-0 advantage.

Daryl Thompson posted another terrific start tonight.  The right hander retired the first 16 batters of the game.  But, with one out in the sixth inning, Gabriel Bracamonte broke up the perfect game bid with a solo shot to left field.  Thompson recovered though, pitching seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and two runs, while walking none.

Going into the eighth inning, the Blue Crabs led 4-2.  Mat Latos (S, 13) entered the game the game with one out and runners on first and second in the top of the eighth.  After issuing a walk, Latos rebounded by getting out of the inning without surrendering a run.  Southern Maryland tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth inning.  In the top of the ninth inning, Latos recorded a 1-2-3 inning to give the Blue Crabs a 5-2 victory.  In total, Latos pitched one and two thirds innings, allowing no hits.

The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, Sunday August 4th for the series finale of a three game set with the Somerset Patriots, and a 2:05 p.m first pitch.
