LA PLATA, MD—In a significant development on Monday, February 26, 2024, Malcolm Fluellyn, a 27-year-old former substitute teacher from Bryans Road, pleaded guilty to multiple charges involving the sexual abuse of minors at General Smallwood Middle School. Tony Covington, the State’s Attorney for Charles County, disclosed that Fluellyn accepted guilt for two counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor and six counts of Fourth-Degree Sexual Offense.
The case came to light on February 10, 2023, when a school resource officer alerted the Charles County Sheriff’s Office about a possible sexual assault involving Fluellyn and several students. The subsequent investigation unearthed that Fluellyn, who had been employed as a permanent substitute teacher at the school from December 2022 to February 2023, engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the victims, some of whom were subjected to such incidents on multiple occasions. Moreover, Fluellyn exploited social media platforms like Instagram to target some of the students, making unsolicited and inappropriate sexual remarks about their bodies.
Victims of Fluellyn’s actions were identified to be between 12 and 13 years old. The school administration took swift action, terminating Fluellyn’s employment upon learning of the allegations.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 15, 2024, where Fluellyn is facing up to 50 years in prison, marking a significant response from the legal system to the breach of trust and violation of the safety of students. This case underscores the critical importance of vigilance and prompt action in protecting students and maintaining a safe educational environment.
