Anglers in Maryland are currently experiencing a rich bounty of fish varieties across state waters, with an array of species showing strong presence, from redfish and rockfish to mackerel and trout. The situation is especially vibrant in the southern regions, including the lower Potomac, St. Mary’s River, and Breton Bay.
In the lower Potomac and adjacent areas like Smith Creek and Breton Bay, slot redfish, measuring between 18 to 27 inches, are predominantly found, offering a thrilling challenge for fishing enthusiasts. The Patuxent River is also home to a considerable number of redfish, though here they are mostly smaller, typically referred to as puppy drum. For those skilled with a rod, slot-sized fish are accessible by trolling small bucktails and jigs along the oyster bars in shallow waters.

Large bull reds are another attraction in the bay, though they can be elusive. Notably, a seasoned angler recently encountered a significant challenge when a large redfish took his jig in the St. Mary’s River, ultimately spooling his line.
Speckled trout, which coexist with the redfish, are showing up in impressive sizes. These trout are particularly fond of tiny spot fish, and successful catches often occur around daybreak, exploiting live bait techniques near structural features in the water.
Despite the abundance of fish, recent weather conditions—characterized by lazy tides, low water levels, and high summer temperatures—have slowed down many fishing activities, with only early morning and late evening times proving fruitful.
However, anglers found reasons to celebrate over the past weekend as mackerel and bluefish provided exciting catches throughout the bay, despite rough waters that proved challenging for less experienced fishers. The mackerel population remains concentrated in the southern areas, but there are signs of them moving northward toward Cedar Point Hollow.
As the cooler weather of late summer approaches, expectations are rising that fish will become increasingly active and easier to catch. However, anglers should note that rough weather is forecasted for the coming weekend, potentially impacting fishing plans.
This period of abundant fish and diverse species offers a perfect opportunity for both seasoned anglers and novices to experience the thrill of fishing in Maryland’s rich waters.
