La Plata, MD – In a verdict reached by a Charles County Circuit Court, Deanthony Lamont Warrick, 35, of Indian Head, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder of Jasmine Lakesha Hicks. The sentencing was handed down on August 6, 2024, by Judge William R. Greer, Jr., following Warrick’s conviction by a local jury on June 6.
State’s Attorney Tony Covington highlighted the gravity of the sentence for first-degree murder and related charges. “This case required the most serious penalty available in Maryland, and the court’s decision reflects the severity of the crime committed,” said Covington. He added that the decision to pursue life without parole was not taken lightly, emphasizing the thorough notice and legal processes followed to secure such a sentencing.
The case originated from a tragic incident on April 12, 2023, when police were called to a home in Bryans Road where they found Ms. Hicks deceased with multiple stab wounds. Investigations revealed that prior to the attack, Warrick and Ms. Hicks had been arguing outside his residence. The argument escalated when Warrick accused another individual of theft, which led to him attacking Ms. Hicks.
During the sentencing, Assistant State’s Attorney Laura Caspar described the brutality of the crime, noting that Ms. Hicks was left to die alone after being stabbed multiple times. “The surveillance audio captured during the murder evidenced a prolonged and painful death,” Caspar stated, reinforcing the decision for a life sentence without parole.
In addition to the life sentence for first-degree murder, Warrick was also sentenced for possession of a dangerous weapon, a controlled substance, and regulated firearms, reflecting his previous convictions of violent crimes.
The sentencing brings to a close a case that has deeply affected the community, with the court’s decision resonating as a stern reminder of the consequences of violent crime.
