A St. Mary’s County man has been convicted on multiple charges related to animal cruelty and the production of obscene material involving his pet dog, officials announced Wednesday.
Sean Patrick Kraese, 24, of Piney Point, faces up to seven years in prison after being found guilty of aggravated animal cruelty and distributing obscene material. The verdict followed a bench trial presided over by Judge Joseph M. Stanalonis, concluding on August 20, 2024.

The investigation into Kraese began in June 2022 when neighbors alerted the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to a disturbing scene on his property, which included numerous dead animals, burn piles, and bone piles emitting a noxious odor. A subsequent search of Kraese’s residence led to the discovery of deceased animals and bones, along with the seizure of his phone.
Upon examining the phone, detectives uncovered videos depicting Kraese engaging in sexual acts with his dog. Further investigation revealed that Kraese was an active participant in an online “zoophilia” community, where he distributed these videos and solicited others to engage in similar acts.
“The Defendant’s actions were not only disturbing, but a profound betrayal of the trust and responsibility we have for animals,” stated State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling. “The exploitation and abuse of animals for sexual gratification reflects a deep moral failing and an utter disregard for the dignity of all living things.”
Sterling emphasized the conviction as a reinforcement of the commitment to protect vulnerable animals. “By holding the Defendant accountable for his depraved behavior, we reinforce our commitment to protect those who cannot speak for themselves,” she added.
The prosecution was led by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Proctor and Assistant State’s Attorney Zachary Varda. Sergeant Keith Moritz of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office was the lead investigator in the case.
A sentencing hearing for Kraese is scheduled for October 1, 2024, where he will receive his final sentence.
