Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office are actively investigating two attempted carjacking incidents that occurred late Saturday night in California, Maryland. Both incidents involved groups of suspects attempting to steal vehicles in separate locations, with victims managing to escape unharmed.
The first attempt occurred at approximately 9:34 p.m. near the intersection of FDR Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a female driver was approached by several individuals, all described as black males. One suspect, dressed in black and wearing a blue surgical mask, brandished a handgun and demanded her vehicle. The victim, fortunately, managed to drive away from the scene without injury.
Later that night, a second attempted carjacking took place around 11:42 p.m. at a convenience store on 22711 Three Notch Road. The male victim had just made a purchase when four black males, similarly dressed in all black and wearing face masks, surrounded his car and demanded his vehicle. Like the earlier victim, this individual was able to quickly drive away from the scene, and the suspects fled the area on foot.
Both incidents are now under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Individuals with knowledge of the events are encouraged to contact Sergeant Keith Moritz at 301-475-4200, extension 8093, or via email at Keith.Moritz@stmaryscountymd.gov.

The Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to local residents, urging them to stay vigilant and be mindful of their surroundings, particularly in parking lots or other unfamiliar areas. Authorities emphasize the importance of quick action if something feels unsafe, recommending that motorists call 911 immediately. The Sheriff’s Office stated, “Your quick action can help prevent potential crimes and ensure your safety.”
The two incidents, though separated by time and location, share common elements. In both cases, the suspects were described as black males, dressed similarly in black clothing and wearing face masks. Both victims were able to evade harm by driving away quickly from the scene. However, the possibility of armed individuals attempting to steal vehicles in the area has raised concern among law enforcement and residents alike.
The sheriff’s office has not released additional details on the suspects’ identities or whether the two incidents are connected. However, the investigation is ongoing, and the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities that could aid the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time.
The incidents highlight an ongoing concern for safety in parking lots and less populated areas during late hours. Officials have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid situations that may leave them vulnerable to such crimes. The sheriff’s office advises residents to keep their vehicles locked, be aware of surroundings, and avoid distractions while approaching their cars.
Residents are reminded to report any unusual behavior or concerns to the authorities. “Your cooperation can help us keep the community safe and prevent further crimes,” said the Sheriff’s Office in their statement.
Authorities will continue to update the public as the investigation unfolds. For now, local law enforcement remains vigilant and continues to gather information to solve the cases.
