Travelers passing through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI Marshall) Airport this winter will have the chance to view artwork created by a local student, Nicole Nnaemeka, in the Youth Art Gallery. Nnaemeka, a third-grade student from William B. Wade Elementary School, has her oil pastel work featured in the Maryland Art Education Association (MAEA) BWI Fall 2024 Exhibition.
Nnaemeka’s artwork was selected from among submissions from young artists throughout Maryland. The work was completed during an oil pastel blending lesson in Susanti Martinez’s second-grade art class at Wade Elementary. Nnaemeka’s piece, created when she was in second grade, now joins other student artworks displayed in one of Maryland’s busiest public spaces.

Martinez, Nnaemeka’s art teacher, praised her dedication and teamwork in the classroom. “Nicole is one of those students who always follows the directions and instruction in art,” said Martinez. “She is willing to help other students.” Her guidance and support have clearly contributed to Nnaemeka’s achievement, highlighting the importance of early arts education.
The exhibit is located in BWI Marshall Airport’s Youth Art Gallery, which can be found in the Observation Gallery on the upper level near the B/C security checkpoint. This display, which will run through the fall and winter, offers passengers the opportunity to engage with local creativity while traveling.
A reception celebrating the opening of the MAEA BWI Fall 2024 Exhibition will be held on Nov. 2 at the airport in Baltimore. Visitors and art enthusiasts are welcome to attend, providing a chance to meet the young artists and celebrate their achievements.
The inclusion of student artwork at a major transportation hub underscores the importance of art in education and the role it plays in the development of young minds. The MAEA exhibition serves as a platform for young artists like Nnaemeka to gain exposure and recognition for their talent. This opportunity gives students the chance to display their work in a professional setting, inspiring future creativity and learning.
