The Hallmark Channel has launched its widely anticipated “Countdown to Christmas” lineup, debuting nine of 32 new holiday films planned for the 2024 season. The annual holiday programming has already boosted the network to new heights in cable ratings, surpassing even major news and sports channels in viewership.

According to Nielsen, Hallmark became the fourth most-watched cable network in primetime between Oct. 28 and Nov. 3, with only Fox News, MSNBC, and ESPN attracting more viewers in the evening hours. This ranking has solidified the network’s position as a seasonal television giant as it draws millions with festive films that often outperform competitors, including CNN and HGTV.

Since the premiere of its first holiday movie, “‘Twas the Date Before Christmas,” on Oct. 18, the Hallmark Channel has seen a steady increase in viewership. From Oct. 18 to the week ending on Nov. 3, Hallmark rose from the seventh to the fifth most-watched network across the entire day, attracting an average of 446,000 viewers during peak hours, a rise from the 387,000 viewers it drew in the initial week of programming.

Increasing Audience and Dominance Among Female Viewers

In its first weekend, Hallmark’s lineup propelled the channel to the top rank among entertainment networks, particularly with female audiences over age 18. This marks a significant accomplishment, as Hallmark outperformed other channels in this demographic, including Investigation Discovery, TLC, and HGTV. Its appeal to women continues to drive its seasonal success, bolstered by new content that aligns with holiday themes.

Despite its popularity, Hallmark’s holiday programming has yet to break into the weekly top 40 cable broadcasts. However, the network says its programming had reached 12.3 million unique viewers as of Oct. 30, demonstrating the breadth of its holiday influence. Last season, the network’s most-watched Christmas movie, “A Merry Scottish Christmas,” attracted 3.3 million viewers, setting a high benchmark Hallmark aims to meet or exceed this year.

New Titles Drive Ratings Surge

The “Countdown to Christmas” lineup showcases a wide variety of storylines, from classic holiday love stories to comedic adventures. The programming includes a mix of recurring themes and fresh concepts that appeal to fans seeking a combination of comfort and novelty. Some of the 2024 holiday highlights include:

  • “Holiday Crashers” (Oct. 19): This film follows two best friends who fabricate new identities to attend exclusive holiday parties, leading them to unexpected paths of love and self-discovery.
  • “Scouting for Christmas” (Oct. 20): Starring Tamera Mowry-Housley, this movie centers on a single mother who balances her career and family during the holidays.
  • “Operation Nutcracker” (Oct. 25): An event planner and a local heir team up to find a missing antique nutcracker before a crucial holiday auction.
  • “Our Holiday Story” (Nov. 2): This romantic tale follows two intertwined love stories from different eras.
  • “Holiday Mismatch” (Nov. 3): Two women team up to prevent their children’s budding romance, only to discover more about themselves along the way.

Upcoming Films and Special Cameos

The upcoming slate includes “Trivia at St. Nicks” (Nov. 8) featuring Tammin Sursok and Brant Daugherty in a holiday trivia competition, and “Santa Tell Me” (Nov. 9), in which a designer embarks on a journey of romantic discovery. Highlights in November include “A Carol for Two” and “Three Wiser Men and a Boy,” a sequel to the 2022 hit “Three Wise Men and a Baby.” The highly anticipated “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” (Nov. 30) will include cameos from Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and several players, tapping into the team’s fanbase.

Hallmark’s Strategic Approach to Holiday Programming

While Hallmark’s formula of romance, family themes, and holiday magic has drawn comparisons to traditional network programming, its unique appeal to a loyal holiday audience makes it a powerhouse. Its combination of heartwarming stories, star power, and occasional cameos keeps viewers engaged year after year, contributing to Hallmark’s steady holiday season success. The network’s ability to secure high ratings, especially with female viewers, underscores its position in a competitive market dominated by sports and news networks.

As Hallmark’s holiday programming continues to unfold, the network is likely to capture additional audiences leading up to Christmas, solidifying its place as a holiday staple. For fans and advertisers alike, Hallmark’s seasonal lineup represents a time-tested formula that celebrates the spirit of the season while sustaining the channel’s annual holiday ratings boost.
