MARYLAND, Dec. 19, 2024—With millions of Marylanders preparing to hit the roads for holiday travel, the Maryland State Police (MSP) announced an increase in highway safety patrols over the next two weeks. State Troopers from all 23 barracks, along with the specialized State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, will focus on reducing impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving.

Targeted Patrols and Checkpoints

Enhanced enforcement efforts will include saturation patrols and checkpoints aimed at curbing dangerous driving behaviors. The SPIDRE team, comprised of specially trained troopers, will concentrate on identifying and apprehending impaired drivers. These initiatives are supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s (MVA) Highway Safety Office.

Preventable Tragedies

According to the MVA’s Highway Safety Office, Maryland roads have seen 537 fatalities and thousands of injuries this year, largely due to impairment, distraction, speeding, and aggressive driving. These preventable factors underscore the importance of heightened patrol efforts during the holiday season.

Tips for Safe Travel

Maryland State Police encourage motorists to prioritize safety by following these guidelines:

  • Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time to avoid rushing.
  • Designate a Sober Driver: If drinking, arrange for a sober driver and give them your keys.
  • Use Alternatives: Consider public transportation, taxis, or ride-share services if a sober driver is unavailable.
  • Intervene When Necessary: Don’t let friends drive if they appear impaired.
  • Report Impaired Drivers: Call 911 if you suspect someone is driving under the influence.
  • Buckle Up: Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid distractions such as texting or using a cellphone that isn’t hands-free.
  • Move Over: For vehicles displaying warning signals, move over or slow down if it isn’t safe to change lanes.
