DOSWELL, Va. – Kings Dominion is saying goodbye to one of its iconic rides as it prepares for its 50th anniversary celebrations. The Anaconda, a roller coaster that has been a staple of the park since 1991, will be removed before the 2025 season.

An Iconic Ride Bids Farewell

Park officials confirmed the removal following the filing of a demolition request on December 20. Geoff Zindren, a spokesperson for Kings Dominion, acknowledged the emotional impact on parkgoers.

“We understand that saying goodbye to classic rides can be difficult, and we appreciate our guests’ passion for Kings Dominion,” Zindren said.

Anaconda was a groundbreaking attraction when it debuted, becoming the first looping roller coaster in the world to feature an underwater tunnel. It also became one of the park’s most photographed rides. Despite its legacy, the decision to retire the ride aligns with the park’s ongoing efforts to refresh and enhance its offerings.

Fans React

The news has sparked a wave of nostalgia and disappointment among fans. Kings Dominion fan site KDFans.com expressed sadness over the decision, stating, “To see it erased from the landscape of Kings Dominion will be very sad for many.”

What’s Next for Kings Dominion?

The removal of Anaconda comes as Kings Dominion gears up for its 50th anniversary in 2025. A new roller coaster, Rapterra, is set to debut as part of the celebration. According to Zindren, Rapterra represents the park’s commitment to delivering memorable experiences.

Rapterra Launch and Wing Over View

“We’re confident that the addition of Rapterra and our upcoming 50th anniversary celebration underscores our commitment to elevating the park experience,” he said.

Additionally, another roller coaster will undergo a transformation. The Intimidator 305 will be rebranded as Pantherian in 2025, reflecting the park’s evolving theme and branding.

New Leadership Under Six Flags

Kings Dominion is now part of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation following its recent merger with Cedar Fair. The merger marks a new chapter for the park as it seeks to modernize its attractions while preserving its legacy.

Legacy of Anaconda

For over three decades, Anaconda thrilled millions of riders with its loops, turns, and unique underwater tunnel. While the decision to remove the ride may be bittersweet for longtime fans, Kings Dominion is looking to the future, aiming to balance nostalgia with innovation.
