LA PLATA, Md. — The Town of La Plata has named Chuck Stevens as its new town manager, effective June 16, 2025, following an extensive nationwide search. Selected from approximately 50 candidates, Stevens emerged as the top choice after a rigorous vetting process and interviews with three finalists, bringing a wealth of experience in public administration, infrastructure, and financial planning to the role.
The Town Council’s search committee prioritized candidates with proven leadership and expertise suited to La Plata’s needs. Mayor Jeannine James highlighted Stevens’ qualifications, stating, “The Council selected Chuck Stevens for this leadership position because of his exceptional qualifications and broad range of expertise in water management, infrastructure development, and disaster planning. His proven track record in financial management and long-term capital planning ensures that La Plata is well-positioned for future stability.”
Stevens has served as the County Manager for La Plata County, Colorado, since 2019. In this role, he oversaw county operations, managed budgets, and led initiatives in infrastructure and emergency preparedness, according to the La Plata County government website. Before that, he held positions as assistant county manager and IT applications manager for the county, demonstrating versatility in public administration. Stevens’ earlier career included 25 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, followed by a civilian role with the Marine Corps in federal government, providing him with extensive leadership and operational experience.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Stevens said, “I am truly honored and excited to serve as the next town manager of La Plata. This vibrant community has such a rich history and promising future, and I look forward to working alongside residents, business owners, and local leaders to build upon the Town’s strengths while addressing new opportunities. My family and I are eager to fully immerse ourselves in this wonderful community.”
La Plata, a town of approximately 10,000 residents, is known for its historic charm and commitment to sustainable growth. The town manager oversees daily operations, implements council policies, and manages budgets and infrastructure projects, as outlined on the Town of La Plata’s official website. Stevens’ appointment comes at a time when the town is focusing on water management and infrastructure improvements, areas where his expertise is expected to drive progress.
The selection process, which began earlier this year, involved community input and collaboration with a professional search firm, ensuring a transparent and thorough evaluation, according to a Southern Maryland Chronicle report. Stevens’ military background and experience in Colorado’s diverse administrative challenges were cited as key factors in his selection, equipping him to address La Plata’s unique needs, including disaster preparedness in a region prone to occasional flooding and storms.
As Stevens prepares to relocate with his family, the town anticipates a smooth transition. The Town Council expressed confidence in his ability to lead La Plata toward a stable and prosperous future, building on its reputation as a welcoming community with a strong sense of history and civic pride.
