WALDORF, Md., April 23, 2025 — Nicholas Adam, principal of J.P. Ryon Elementary School, has been named the 2025 Charles County Public Schools Principal of the Year, recognized for his innovative leadership and dedication to creating a supportive environment for students and staff. Since taking the helm at Ryon in 2023, Adam has implemented technology-driven curricula and fostered community partnerships, earning accolades from educators, students, and parents.
Adam’s vision for Ryon centers on preparing students for a rapidly changing world through modern teaching methods and a safe, inclusive school culture. “He is not only a principal, but an inspiring leader who embodies the values of empathy, innovation and resilience,” said Nicholas Gardiner, a fifth-grade teacher at T.C. Martin Elementary School who previously worked with Adam at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary. “He ensures that students feel heard, supported and motivated to reach their full potential,” Gardiner added. “Mr. Adam is an exceptional mentor and role model for the teaching staff.”

Adam’s educational journey began as a special education teacher at Eva Turner Elementary School after graduating from Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y. He served there for seven years before becoming an assistant principal at Malcolm Elementary for two years and William A. Diggs Elementary for another two. In January 2018, he was appointed principal of Walter J. Mitchell Elementary, where he served for five years before joining Ryon at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
At Ryon, Adam is a constant presence, balancing approachability with authority. “I have been surprised by how fast he is,” said fifth grader Keyla Mendez Hernandez. “Even though [he] had something very important to do, [he] was still going places and helping as fast as [he] could. I have realized that Mr. Adam always comes to check on everyone’s classroom to see if we are doing to the right thing.” Fifth grader Azariah Jackson added, “[He] is the best principal I’ve had, and I like that we can joke around. But when it is time to be serious, [he’ll] tell me the honest truth. [He] tells me what’s right and wrong.”
Adam prioritizes staff development, encouraging teachers to adopt innovative methods. “Mr. Adam leads courageous conversations that promote, encourage and develop the best parts of each individual staff member,” said Kayla B. Hawkins, assistant principal at Ryon. He also collaborates with community organizations to provide resources, extending education beyond the classroom. “His dedication to the community and commitment to the school climate and culture is remarkable to experience,” Hawkins said.
Adam strengthens ties with parents through “lunch bunches,” morning greetings, and active participation in dismissals. “Mr. Adam gives students a sense that they are seen, safe and secure,” said Michael and Angela Rogalski, parents of Ryon students. “His unique vision and approach seem to not just see the best in others but actually bring it out.”
