LA PLATA, Md. — The Board of Education of Charles County approved the appointment of Linda Iverson, Ph.D., as Charles County Chief of Schools during its August 12, 2025, meeting. Iverson, who brings more than 30 years of educational experience, began her role with Charles County Public Schools on August 18, 2025.
Iverson previously served as superintendent of schools in Greenburgh Central School District in New York for four years and in Wilkinsburg School District in Pennsylvania for five years. In her address to the board, Iverson expressed enthusiasm for the position.
“I am so excited to be here with Charles County Public Schools and to join this wonderful team of executive staff. I look forward to partnering with teachers, administrators, students and families as we continue the work of providing students with access to high-quality instruction. I am so excited to be here. I feel like I am home,” Iverson said.
As Charles County Chief of Schools, Iverson joins the leadership team under Superintendent of Schools Maria Navarro, Ed.D. Her responsibilities include overseeing schools and administrators in collaboration with executive directors, managing community engagement, athletics and extracurricular activities, student engagement and conduct, disciplinary matters, and parent concerns. Iverson also serves as chief negotiator for contracts with the Education Association of Charles County certificated staff union.
Navarro welcomed Iverson’s addition to the team.
“Dr. Iverson brings to CCPS a wealth of experience and knowledge in school administration and leadership, student success and achievement and professional development of staff, teachers and school administrators. I look forward to working alongside her as we prepare to open schools and embark on a newly focused strategic plan. Her expertise will support the work of the strategic plan, and most importantly in our focus areas of recruitment and retention, student success and achievement and school culture and climate,” Navarro said.
Iverson’s career spans systems with enrollments from 1,000 to 85,000 students. She has focused on instructional oversight, facility transformations, energy efficiency, operational expansions, budget management, school reforms, strategic planning and community engagement. Her work emphasizes student achievement improvements, professional development, principal support, social emotional learning, restorative practices and expanding International Baccalaureate opportunities.
Before her superintendent roles, Iverson spent five years as executive director of principal support with Baltimore City Public Schools. She started as an English teacher in District of Columbia Public Schools, advanced to assistant principal in East Cleveland City Schools in Ohio, and served as principal at elementary and middle levels for 15 years in East Hartford Public Schools in Connecticut, later overseeing curriculum and instruction there.
Iverson holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Supervision from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, a Master of Arts in Secondary School Administration and Supervision, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Education, both from Bowie State University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Charles County Public Schools serves 27,765 students across 38 schools and seven educational centers, including 23 elementary schools, nine middle schools and seven high schools, with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. The district, part of Southern Maryland’s educational landscape, reported improvements in its annual report card data, with seven schools earning four stars and 27 earning three stars in the most recent assessment. Navarro, a veteran educator with experience in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C., was unanimously reappointed for a second four-year term in February 2025.
Iverson’s prior leadership in Greenburgh included recognition from New York State Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky for her contributions. In Wilkinsburg, she emphasized raising expectations and accountability to provide quality education. Her 34 years in education cover administration at various levels, from high school to elementary, central office and district-wide roles.
The Charles County Chief of Schools position aligns with the district’s strategic plan, focusing on recruitment, retention, student success and school culture. As schools prepare to open on August 25, 2025, for kindergarten through Grade 12, and September 2, 2025, for prekindergarten, Iverson’s expertise supports these priorities. Charles County, with a population of 171,973, relies on its public schools for community development in Southern Maryland.
This appointment follows the district’s efforts to enhance programs, such as changes to Project Lead the Way biomedical science and engineering, and initiatives like the Family and Community Engagement Academy. Iverson’s role as Charles County Chief of Schools positions her to contribute to ongoing improvements in student achievement and professional development within the system.
