The U.S. Postal Service released a new Happy Birthday Forever stamp on April 18, 2026, in Providence, Rhode Island, to celebrate personal milestones with colorful cake and candle imagery. The stamp debuted at a Perfect Pairing Pop-Up Party hosted by the Greeting Card Association at Track 15 in Union Station, an event that paired cards and stamps for the public.
“Our customers have been asking for more occasion-based stamps, and we are pleased to give them what they asked for,” said Lisa Bobb-Semple, USPS stamp services director. “The new Happy Birthday stamp also goes well with matching USPS-branded, stamp-inspired note cards and wrapping paper.”
The stamp features an oversize white birthday cake topped with nine alternating orange, pink, white and red lighted candles. A pink decorative scalloped edge sits below the candles. Bold, hand-drawn lettering spells out “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” in blue, pink, orange and red across three lines. The cake appears against a rich blue selvage, with “FOREVER USA” printed in white below the design.
Art director Greg Breeding of USPS worked with original artwork by Lisa Congdon. “My hope for the stamp was that it would have a bold and colorful impact,” Breeding said. “Lisa’s work is most always both and her hand-drawn lettering is fun and inventive.” The design aims to evoke carefree childhood fun and suits birthday cards, invitations, letters and packages sent to friends and loved ones near and far.
This marks the fifth Happy Birthday stamp issued by the Postal Service and the first in five years. Previous versions appeared in 1987 with a cake slice and single candle, 1988 with a row of colorful candles, 2002 with festive confetti, and 2021 with a piñata, hat, cake, candles and balloons.
Birthdays as a widespread celebration in the United States grew in the late 19th century. Earlier observances in the country were mainly for the wealthy or national figures such as George Washington. Increased disposable income and shifts in parenting approaches helped extend the tradition to everyday children.
The new stamp continues a tradition of occasion-specific postage that includes designs for thank-you notes, anniversaries and holiday mailings. It is available as a single design in sheets of 20. As a Forever stamp, its value remains equal to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate regardless of future price changes.
Southern Maryland residents can purchase the stamp at local post offices, through the USPS Postal Store at usps.com, by phone at 844-737-7826, or via mail order through USA Philatelic catalogs. Officially licensed stamp-inspired products, including note cards and wrapping paper, are also offered on Amazon.
The release aligns with customer requests for more personalized mailing options. Post offices nationwide carry the stamp, making it easy for anyone planning birthday greetings to add a festive touch without needing additional postage later.
In Southern Maryland, the stamp offers a simple way to brighten mailed celebrations for family and friends. Local post offices in St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles counties stock new issues shortly after release. Collectors and casual users alike can combine it with existing card selections for coordinated mailings.
The April 18 event in Providence included a retail market with vendors offering cards, stationery and related items. Attendees could bring their own birthday cards to pair with the new stamps on site.
This issuance adds to the Postal Service’s 2026 stamp program, which also features other designs announced earlier in the year. The Happy Birthday stamp provides a practical and cheerful option for the millions of birthday cards mailed annually across the country.
