ST. MARY’S CITY — A Leonardtown graduate got St. Mary’s College of Maryland field hockey going, and a three-goal fourth quarter finished the job.
Sophomore Josie Mascolo, a St. Mary’s Ryken alumna, scored twice in the second quarter, and junior Olivia Schwendeman added two goals in less than two minutes late as the Seahawks beat Lancaster Bible 5-1 in a United East Conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
The win improved St. Mary’s to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Lancaster Bible dropped to 5-9 and 3-3.

Mascolo answers quickly
After a scoreless first quarter, Mascolo broke through at 19:20, driving a shot into the lower far-left corner off assists from sophomore Morgan Knott and senior Katherine “Kat” O’Brien.
Lancaster Bible tied it at 22:14 when Mallie McNatt collected a loose ball and put it inside the far post. Mascolo restored the lead at 27:39, beating goalkeeper Lauren Stup one-on-one, and St. Mary’s led 2-1 at halftime.
The two goals were the fifth and sixth of the season for Mascolo, who put all four of her shots on goal. It was her second career multi-goal game.
Three goals in under six minutes
After a scoreless third quarter, St. Mary’s pulled away fast. Sophomore defender Julie Presgraves scored 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, at 45:39, on an assist from Knott.
Schwendeman, a junior forward from Marriottsville, then scored into an empty net at 49:30 off a pass from senior Emma Mastrangelo and finished a loose ball at 51:06. Those were her fifth and sixth goals of the season and her third career multi-goal game.
Knott finished with two assists. Junior goalkeeper Sophia Kent made three saves in 60 minutes, and Stup made five for Lancaster Bible.
