A Waldorf woman became the second Charles County resident in a week to win a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize, this time using a combination of her family members’ ages in the Oct. 19 drawing.

The winner, a federal government employee and grandmother, discovered her good fortune over a month after purchasing the ticket. She had matched four out of five numbers plus the Powerball. “I can’t believe I won using all of their ages,” she shared, expressing gratitude and surprise.

Her strategy involved selecting numbers based on the ages of her children, siblings, and a grandchild, a departure from the more common method of using birth dates. “This is the first year that I have tried these numbers,” she said, adding that she is unsure whether she will continue with the same numbers or adjust them as her family members grow older.

The winning ticket was purchased at Waldorf Food Mart Citgo, located at 11901 Business Park Drive in Charles County. Waldorf has proven to be a hotspot for Powerball wins, with another resident claiming a similar $50,000 prize just days earlier.

When she finally scanned her ticket, the woman was initially doubtful about her win. The ticket checker displayed the $50,000 prize, and the store clerk confirmed it for her. Now, she plans to use her winnings to pay bills and intends to keep playing, aiming to match all five numbers and the Powerball for the full jackpot.

The Powerball jackpot continues to grow, with the next drawing on Nov. 20 offering an estimated annuity of $155 million or a cash option of $71.3 million.
